10 Jobs College Students Can Do from Home This Summer

Summertime is when college students typically find a seasonal job or do an internship in order to get some relevant, real-world work experience and earn some money for the next school year's Friday night pizza runs and a new phone to stay connected. The summer of 2020 was a bust for most college students. Many of them found themselves either taking a retail job or doing gig work, such as delivering groceries or prescriptions to people who weren't able to do those activities because of their risk for getting infected with COVID-19. On February 8, economists at the Department of Labor offered some promising news about summer jobs for college students. Here are 10 opportunities that might be an option for you or someone you know.

Entertainment

In 2020, the entertainment industry was hit hard by the pandemic. Now that businesses in the industry have had some time to adapt, they've been able to rework some of their jobs into remote positions. A college student could work for one of the many animation, streaming service or television and media companies. Remote design, customer service and technical support jobs are available.

Gig Work

Gig work is a good way to fill in the gaps of a weird part-time work schedule. A college student could translate documents or enter data. Writing opportunities or tutoring may also be options.

Marketing and Communications

Writing and distributing press releases, creating social media posts and developing viral email marketing campaigns are all jobs college students could do from home. A college student could also start crafting SEO skills through online tutorials and put them to practice on their own website or for an employer.

Research and Survey Jobs

College students could work as survey administrators. There are also jobs for doing research. This might involve looking up and abstracting data, reviewing information entered into a database, finding relevant legal or scientific articles for a lawyer or college professor or doing competitor research for a large business.

Social Media Management

Some companies and entrepreneurs will hire college students to manage their social media accounts. You may also find some nonprofit organizations who need someone to do this for a few hours each week. Building up a client base could prove to be a lucrative start in a career in media and communications.

Internships

Some internships are paid by the employer. For example, Amazon will have summer internship opportunities for college students. Those opportunities include software development, quality assurance and marketing. Students who stick with the company will gain access to employee benefits, including educational tuition assistance that helps pay for a vocational program or two-year community college class.

Online Tutoring or Teaching

A lot of elementary to high school students haven't done well with remote learning. Their schools may have cut out electives, such as foreign language. Students may simply not have learned difficult concepts well in the remote learning environment. If you're majoring in chemistry, biology, physics, math, English or a foreign language, there are online teaching and tutoring opportunities available. If you got a great score on the ACT or SAT, you could offer online tutoring for those tests.

Telemedicine Support

Many physicians, nurse practitioners, counselors and therapists have partly or even entirely shifted to a telemedicine model of healthcare delivery. There are telemedicine support jobs available. You might find work at a hospital, physicians' group or practice or health clinic assisting with the coordination and scheduling of telehealth visits.

Virtual Event Planning

Many in-person events were canceled in 2020, and a lot of them are still being canceled in 2021. A lot of organizations have chosen to offer virtual events as a substitute. You could be a virtual event planner. The event organizer might need help with registrations, getting people connected to the right platform and issuing credentials or credits. You could be the person who recruits lecturers or teachers. There are even online wedding venues that stream wedding ceremonies to guests around the world, and they also need logistical and technology support.

Data Analysis

College students who are learning SAS, Stata, R or a computer coding language may be able to perform remote data analysis. They could also offer database maintenance or perform website design services. A student who is interested in a career in statistics, scientific research, epidemiology, public health or economics would do well to develop these skills.
