Artificial Intelligence Reigns Supreme
The top emerging job is that of artificial intelligence specialist. This job pays an average of $140,000 per year and even that may be a conservative estimate. Salaries for positions in this field in the technology hubs can far exceed this annual amount, and hiring in this area has been exploding in recent years. Just in the past three years, the number of job listings in this field have more than tripled. Candidates who have the necessary skill set for this job are highly sought after and often have the ability to set their own terms.
There are very few companies these days that do not have some sort of AI efforts. Accordingly, practically every company that you can think of is in the market for an AI specialist. The great thing about this career is that it does not take too much effort to gain the necessary requirements to be qualified for this job. Companies are even so desperate for talent that they are hiring folks who have a similar but not exactly the same skill set.
Not Everything Is Strictly Technology
Of course, technology and engineering jobs are prominently mentioned throughout this report. However, there is room to head down a promising career path even if you do not have scientific or technology skills. Companies are investing more these days in customer relationships and those who have this know-how will find willing homes at many companies.
In fact, the number six job on the top 10 list is the position of customer success specialist. These positions involve dealing with clients and responding to their concerns. Oftentimes, you are partnering with the client. These jobs will require communications skills and the ability to anticipate a customer's needs. Some of these skills cannot be taught which makes those with an establish track record in this field even more appealing to companies. This field is growing by over 30 percent each year and hiring is showing no signs of slowing down recently.
The Bay Area Stays Hot
In its survey, LinkedIn listed which areas the demand for the jobs was coming from and it is no surprise that the San Francisco Bay Area was featured as a hot area for each of the ten jobs on the survey's list. Bay Area companies simply cannot hire people fast enough to fill their needs. This leads to a scenario in which salaries and job demand in San Francisco are through the roof. While living expenses are also high in the Bay Area, there is little to know unemployment. San Francisco is a great place to get your feet wet in a given career field before you reassess after a few years in the career field. Not only is the Bay Area hot, but the other tech metropolises continue to remain hubs of job creation. This includes Seattle, Boston and Washington, D.C. Chances are that you may need to spend time in one of these hubs to get the experience that you need.
There Are Markets Outside the Major Hubs
At the same time, if you find that the Bay Area is just too expensive or congested, there are several emerging tech markets that are competing for workers. Some of the areas that featured in LinkedIn's survey included Austin, Raleigh and Portland. These cities are home to a growing number of these emerging jobs positions. For example, Raleigh saw the second biggest jump in the country in the number of technology jobs from 2010-2015. These cities are certainly great places to move for established professionals in these fields who may either want a different pace of life or may want to move to an area where you can take on a greater position in a company. There is only so much room for the major established markets to grow and much of the future expansion in these fields will happen in the secondary emerging technology hubs.
